The city of Utrecht lies in the center of The Netherlands. This city harbors one of the most beautiful church towers in the country and it is famous for its historic canals. Aside from these two landmarks, the city also has a vibrant coffee scene that make Utrecht one of the best cities in The Netherlands to go on a coffee trip. This ‘best coffee shops of ‘-list is far from complete, so if your favourite spot is not here, please add it in the comments. The list is written in alphabetical order, except for the first spot: my favourite hotspot.
The best coffee shops in Utrecht: Blackbird Coffee and Vintage.
My number one spot in Utrecht is Blackbird Coffee and Vintage. This shop is located in the center of town and has been there for ages. The owners are like old friends that welcome you home after a long journey. Before you know it, you’ll be drinking a delicious cup of coffee or chatting at the bar.
The owners of Blackbird Coffee do not roast their own coffee but that doesn’t make it any less good. The coffee shop is a well known hotspot in Utrecht and not only offers a place to sit for coffee but for working as well. On the lower level there is also a bicycle shop of the sorts and the underground tunnel connects them with the neighboring shop. This creates a lot of space for people to work or even bigger groups who like to drink coffee together. They use a lower temperature to brew your filter coffee and it has become their signature brewing or so to speak. Aside from the delicious coffee, the counter is stacked with cakes and cookies for the sweet tooth passing by. Blackbird Coffee and Vintage is my number one spot in Utrecht.

The best coffee shops in Utrecht: Nordkapp Coffee.
Nordkapp Coffee is a little out of the way when you visit the city center but it is worth your time. Located in a small suburban area, Nordkapp Coffee is a beacon of specialty coffee in this neighborhood. The shop is tucked away in the same building as beer cafe ‘De Kromme Haring’, a place well known by the locals and businessmen alike. Owner Jasper Overdevest created an espresso bar which is small but really makes you feel at home. The barista behind the bar really takes her time for the customers and knows the regulars as if they are close friends. And it is this open vibe that made me really like Nordkapp Coffee. Take a look at the custom made espresso machine and the myriad of memorabilia they have placed in the shop. Nordkapp Coffee offers espresso based drinks, filter coffees and even a very delicious ‘Tosti’ if you are in for a quick bite. I recommend the Jalapeno Tosti!

The best coffee shops in Utrecht: The Village Coffee and Music.
The Village Coffee and Music is located at the edge of the city center in an area that is quite popular with students and youth. No wonder that this coffee shop is always full with customers. The vibe is laid back and the barista’s are open and know what they are brewing. The nicest thing, perhaps, is the myriad of coffee based drinks they offer: espresso tonic, cold brew tonic and much more. The rock and metal music will not be appreciated by everyone, but I think its awesome that The Village Coffee and Music stays true to their own identity. So we have a unique coffee shop with happy and open baristas. The coffee is great and the atmosphere is laid back and open. All the ingredients for a place in my list of Best Coffee Shops in Utrecht.

Obviously these were not all the coffee shops in Utrecht and so I compiled a list of honorable mentions that were presented to me by close friends in the coffee scene.
Dagger Coffee
Dagger Coffee is way outside of the city center but is one of the most famous shops in Utrecht. From all the submissions I received on social media, Dagger Coffee popped up over and over. It will be my next visit whenever I’m visiting the beautiful city of Utrecht again. Dagger Coffee offers both espresso based drinks and filter coffee.

Koffie Leute Brauhaus
Another name that popped up more than once was Coffee Leute Brauhaus. I don’t know what the name is all about, but I’m sure to find out next time that I’m visiting Utrecht.
Coffee Leute Brauhaus is a typical living room experience. This specially designed filter coffee shop has everything you’d expect in a living room: boardgames, computer games and newspapers. I have been told that the coffee is more than excellent and that the vibe is relaxed and friendly.

30ML coffee roasters
This shop was also mentioned a couple of times and is a sort of specialty coffee chain. Being a ‘chain’ doesn’t mean that the coffee is bad. 30ML has been nominated for several awards in The Netherlands and has been a consistent contender for ‘best coffee in The Netherlands’. Their menu is also outstanding with high quality food! Located near the train station is one of the busiest locations of 30ML and it is worth visiting or so I heard.
